In Robert McKee's "Story", he talks about how humans who experience tragedy will generally react with the appropriate emotional response, at least the first time. McKee also says that, according to the Law of Dimishing Returns, people who experience tragedy over and over and over again become desensitized to triggers, such as seeing someone shot down in the street. The routinization of gun violence ceases to elicit what most of us would consider an appropriate emotional and behavioral reponse, hence the laughter, joking, etc on display in this video and the comments here that try to underscore how foreign the women's lives are from what could be considered "normal", however you choose to define the term.

Clearly McKee was studying WPD for his observations.
