It depends, if you're rich and you want to show it, you'll probably get robbed, or you'll be kidnapped to give all your money to thieves. However, most of the violence is concentrated in the favela and in poor places, places that tourists will hardly want to visit. As for civilians, the rule is very simple: don't mess with drug dealers, they won't mess with you.If a civilian is robbed inside the favela, the drug trade itself goes after the thief and punishes him, either by cutting his fingers, shooting him in the hand or foot, or even killing him. I live in a more upscale area of São Paulo, and until now I have never witnessed or suffered anything violent, so I can say that Brazil is not as dangerous as it seems, you just need to be aware of what you should or shouldn't do.
