This is (if I'm not mistaken) from the period after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Putin is revered in Russia because he brought an end to the enormous poverty and instability from that period. This was in no small part because the US puttet Yeltsin sold out the country to Westen investors. "Interfering in foreign elections" (something Putin supposedly does) would be an understatement to describe how the US helped Yeltsn come into power.

The US did not elect Yeltsin. He became leader of the Russian state while the Soviet Union was still existing.
Yeltsin's policies of selling out state assets to oligarchs (mafia men who fought for these assets by corruption and violence) were continued by Yeltsin's Prime Minister and chosen successor for President...Vladimir V. Putin. Putin did nothing except become the capo di tutti capi, and ended the wild mafia wars for control. It's like saying the Taliban "brought stability" by killing off or absorbing all the other warlords in the Afghan Civil War.
Blaming everything on the US is lazy. The Soviet system was spiralling since the 1970s and was always fated to be a disaster, especially as no one at the top, not even Yeltsin, was a true reformist, they were just Russian nationalists. What you should ask is why Eastern European countries that more fully rejected Sovietism after 1991 did not suffer such a big collapse as Russia, and are still better off
