The pressure might temporarily, but the holding after actually does act as pain relief. We instinctively hold ourselves when wounded to allow the brain to "increase the coherence of one's body map".
Similar to presence of mind, "bodymind", or whatever term one wants to use; holding or touching a body part, especially after fresh injury, essentially lets you confirm that it's out of danger, under your control, and in a situation to be inspected. The sensation of pain has done it's job and grabbed your attention, so it diminishes temporarily before settling into the longer term "soreness" of a recovering wound which serves as a constant reminder.
The body is a wonderful, highly complex, at-times scary thing.

The holding also acts as pain relief due to the ever so slightly decreased blood flow which causes numbness. And I agree, you put it all out very nicely.
What I was talking about was specifically the slamming into the ground though. (In reality we know he did it as an impulse since the body didn't know what was happening and just tried to get the hand out of there)
