It was in mid-morning when María Elena Villacís got a WhatsApp message from her brother Darwín, who was jailed in the Litoral penitentiary, a notorious prison in the coastal Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil.

“They're starting a war in [Wing] 5,” it read. “Call the law, tell them to get into [Wing] 5.”

Knowing the prison's violent reputation, María Elena replied: “I'm praying for you, for the four of you. Take care for God's sake.” Then she called the police.

That was the last time she ever heard from Darwín, 27, the brother she was closest to. His mutilated body was returned to the family last Friday, and buried together with those of his two murdered brothers, Daiby, 28, and Jhonny, 25. All three had shared a cell in Wing 5, the centre of a wave of violence which engulfed the prison on 28 September, killing at least 119 inmates and injuring about 80.

A sad event happened in El Oro, Ecuador . An 11-year-old girl suffered a motorcycle accident when she was going to school with her father and her two brothers. Unfortunately, her youngest lost an arm when she fell from the vehicle after her sweater got tangled in the motorcycle chain. The scene was recorded on security cameras.

As seen in the video spread on social networks, the father was with his three children. What caught the most attention was that only he wore a helmet, the minors did not have any type of safety.

The other minors fell suddenly when the father braked the motorcycle, but did not suffer serious injuries. The worst part went to the 11-year-old girl, who permanently lost her arm despite having undergone surgery.

According to local media, the family is urgently requesting financial help , while users on the networks criticize the fact that there are four passengers in a vehicle for only two. Other people consider that perhaps this is the only way to take their children to school.
