This is a condition in which the brain fails to divide into separate hemispheres, resulting in facial disfigurement, absent midline features of the face, fusion of the cerebral cavities, as well as other issues such as restricted breathing. Sadly, babies with this condition are most commonly stillborn, and those which do survive it, don't survive for particularly long - around 1 to 2 hours tops.

For real, the mother has already become emotionally attached before they're even born, the excitement of giving birth after 9 months of hell only for it to be so badly deformed it's lucky if it lives an hour. Would suck carrying that for 8-9 months with no ultrasound having been done only to see your kid turned out that way. I'd feel like such a failure.

As I explained to another commenter, it's quite common when doing an ultrasound, that the baby's face isn't visible. They turn constantly in the womb, and with this condition being present, if the face is turned away from the ultrasound probe, then the condition simply wouldn't be detectable. Ultrasounds are only performed during routine checks, and they're usually about once every 2 to 4 weeks. I'm amazed it was missed this long, either that or the ultrasound operator simply wasn't skilled enough to position for a facial view.

I would've just assumed they didn't have one done. It was super easy to see our baby's face in the womb. Dude came out looking exactly like the ultrasound showed too! But I live in the US so medical care is likely better than wherever this was.
