Disabling registrations doesn't fix performance; the overwhelming majority of them aren't signing up. It's the sheer volume of traffic doing us in. Bandwidth is finite. Even the Bengali invasion from several months ago wasn't this prolific. All we can do is wait and hope that at least a few of them are alright posters and will stick around.
