I grew up actually playing outside. Came across dead animals in my time groundhogs etc. I’ve always found it fascinating when all the decomposing bugs come for a visit. Weird centipedes, black beatles with red spots, fluorescent green headed flies. It’s like the gates of hell let them out for a nibble.

It smells like a dead animal but has this sickening sweetness, almost fruity, smell to it. If you really want to know what it smells like get a pork chop, put it in a container with a lid. (Like Tupperware kind of thing) Around 18 hours, room temperature, you'll start smelling the sweetness. Leave it out longer and it's almost like you're smelling a human decaying. (Pigs are very similar to humans so they're often used in forensics.) This little experiment won't work with anything else, it has to be pork.

When I was little my grandfather used to slaughter pigs in his field so in a way I know what you are talking about, I wouldn't describe the smell as sweet but I don't really have many memories of it, just a weird tinglingly feeling on my nose and my mother shouting at me to go back inside lol

Yeah, that tingling feeling is hard to get used to. LOL I didn't know that pigs smell similar to us when decaying either until we were introduced to a decaying pig in one of my forensic science classes. It's not sweet like a candy kind of sweet. LOL I've heard about a hundred different descriptions of how it smells. Some people say it's like trash that's turned into soup that's been combined with rotten meat. Maybe to every person the smell is similar but still unique?

probably you're right, i think something like that happens with flavors for example. What's curious for me is that (in general) that smell is repulsing to us or is making us uncomfortable, an instinct thing we cant stop
