Northbound I-5 near Everett was fully blocked for several hours due to a deadly shooting involving the Washington State Patrol (WSP).

After 4 p.m., WSP responded to a report of a road rage incident on the shoulder of I-5 northbound, just north of Marine View Drive.

According to the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART), the suspect began ramming their vehicle into a WSDOT construction vehicle and lift that was on the shoulder of the highway.

Two WSDOT contractors were on the lift/vehicle during the incident.

According to SMART, the suspect was armed with a hammer and a physical fight broke out between the suspect, a WSDOT contractor and a trooper.

During that altercation, a WSP trooper shot the suspect.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The WSDOT contractors had non-life-threatening injuries.

The highway was gridlocked for several hours. WSDOT announced that the highway reopened just before midnight.

Investigators later said a man was shot and killed by a law enforcement official. The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office said their Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART) is investigating the incident.

SMART is called in to investigate police use of force incidents and shootings involving law enforcement.
