Family members claim video shows 26-year-old Michael Blair just moments before he was killed by a Fort Bend County deputy in November. The 20-minute video shows two investigators responding to a man locked in a bathroom after they kicked in the door.
"Drop the knife, drop the knife!" you hear an officer saying.
They ask him to drop a knife a least 50 times, then shock him with a Tazer.
"I want to help you, let it go. I cannot help you until you drop that knife down," the officer says.
Blair appears to lunge at them and the deputy fires his gun 11 times, killing Blair.
"All we're asking is that someone recognize what we recognize. That was brutality," Blair's mother, Kimberly Blair Olaniyi, said.
Blair's family and community activist Quanell X released the video in a press conference Wednesday, claiming it shows police brutality. They won't say where they got the video or how long they've had it. They didn't offer this up during the initial investigation.
"These cases are always lies and truths aren't told. So that tape was held until they would finish their -- quote unquote -- investigation," Quanell X said.
A grand jury no-billed the investigators seen in the video, but a spokesperson for the sheriff's office says this is still an open case and the office will review any new evidence provided, including this video.

I don't see it as brutality. He was told and warned many times to drop the knife but he didn't want to listen. He did it to himself for lunging at the officers with the knife.

A little over 2 1/2 minutes into the video, the cop in the doorway freaks out a bit saying the suspect was going to throw the knife - which always makes me laugh a bit - because I once bought a bunch of real throwing knives - and spent many hours learning to throw them, and thus I know that the odds that someone will do any REAL or SIGNIFICANT damage by throwing a typical household knife are VERY LOW.
It IS scary to have a knife thrown at you - but the probability the knife will hit you with the point when thrown, and will hit you in an area that will do dangerous damage is small.
To give away your knife in a fight by throwing it is just damned stupid.

Do you want to take that chance that this one time will be the random perfect throw right to the neck?
Jump in the discussion.

I can understand the fear - but judging by probabilities is more rational.
For example, it's too common for cops to shoot someone who threatens them with a bat or a stick or a chair, etc.
In all European cities - the cops would simply take these things away from the bad guys. SOME of those cops would get some bumps and bruises. Few would be seriously injured.
I understand the American cops desire not to be injured, BUT, the cops have pushed the value of defending themselves way to far and ignore the respect and value for the life of the people they shoot.
If 3 cops can't take down a guy with a stick - they shouldn't be cops.

Right, they are hyper-vigilant about protecting themselves. Better to kill a suspect than risk being scratched or getting a small bruise.

Most of our police in America can't even pursue a suspect on foot anymore. They don't have the athletic abilities that an officer needs to bring people in alive.

I'm not sure what the percentage would be, but there are 100,000 law agencies in America, and in some of them, they are DESPERATE for officers, and some of them keep employed officers who are so fat they can barely walk.
Some of those particular officers are probably much more likely to shoot a suspect.

So unnecessary. Evacuate the premises and let the dumb bitch starve himself out in his own barricade. Let SWAT handle it.
These cops were fucking fools, wannabe hero-frauds at best. But, I still bet this one will be justified.

there is nothing to debate here the cops did the right thing

The cops were out of their element. There's a reason SWAT teams exist and why they have negotiators and other such resources.
They were legally justified to enter the premises, since the family gave them permission, but there was no other life being threatened, so they didn't need to intervene.
But if you're not interested in debating, then that's fine, too. Good day.

ah yes wait for swat when there is clearly a mentally instable monkey with a knife that can potentially cause innocents to die
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
My point is that there were no innocents. The family evacuated the private property which he had been barricading inside.
They should stop him with utmost force if he escapes into the public, but that's not what happened.
Death squads marching inside private property with a warm welcoming from the family.
Not even blaming the cops for everything. But I'm definitely blaming them for being overly aggressive when there was no need in those moments.

you are not wrong but still in theese intense situations both sides are full of adrenaline and most importantly they fear the uknown reaction of the suspect and the cops
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
Yeah. At the point where the video started and the shooting happened, I will agree that the cops did nothing wrong.
They needed to protect themselves, they feared for their life, yada yada.
I also see the point that adrenaline will distort peoples' judgement and make them act differently. I do not know how I would act in a similar situation.

What?? Calling swat would have just delayed the same outcome. The swat team would have 100% just shot him with no warning's, after a multi-hour siege of course. Unless your point is he should have died faster, I have never seen a swat team use non lethal on aggressive suspect's.

I can see the family holding back the video they had that was probably taken by a security camera, until the police finished making their conclusions about the justification of the shooting - because the police too often DO tell stories, especially right immediatly after an event, that don't line up with facts later discovered, but
This is not brutality. It is standard procedure in America.
My only complaint is that the last few shots may not have been necessary. But the first couple of shots were required to defend the safety of the officers.

This cop didn't want to shoot this fool holding a knife. Hell, just a couple of videos back we watched a perp cut the neck and kill an officer who wasn't prepared. It's easy to have a voice from the keyboard; this ignorant dirt bag wanted to die or he could have simply dropped the knife.

The video you provided shows them shoplifting at a Goodwill. It's all full circle so the police don't give a fuck because that's considered an act of kindness. 3 months later the same apparel will be back on the same racks.

When you take out the familial connection, it's obvious police force was justified. His family will continue to say bullshit though just because, well, he was apart of their family. In the end that man was asking to be shot.

Taze the dude, fill him up with electricity then keep ordering him to, "Drop the Knife"
Electricity causes the body (contraction & spasticity) to Clench up & then Spazz to the voltage until it dissipates. (ppl were Strapped DOWN & IN To ol'Sparky for this Very reason) Doesn't matter how Loud or Often you holler, "DROP THE KNIFE."
Volume Can't. Doesn't. Won't. override involuntary muscle contraction until the electricity disperses, body collapses, smooth brain regains some control & decides or not to let go of the knife

I mean drop the knife is a pretty easy thing to do and if he did that simple task he would still be alive

The point of my statement was that
When electricity is pulsating through the body it causes muscles to contract (tighten up) making you UNABLE to "drop the knife"
