A homeless man with a history of mental illness and criminal convictions killed a New Mexico cop — seconds before he was gunned down by a witness, police said Tuesday.
Las Cruces Officer Jonah Hernandez, 35, was responding to a trespassing call at a business around 5 p.m. Sunday when he was pounced on by repeat offender Armando Silva.
When he arrived, Armando Silva immediately attacked him with a large kitchen knife,” Police Chief Jeremy Story said at a press conference.
“For no reason whatsoever, Silva killed Officer Hernandez.”
Silva, 29, then turned his ire on a bystander who had grabbed a firearm from their car after witnessing the “unprovoked attack,” Story said.
The witness fired at least one gunshot, killing Silva.
They then used Hernandez's radio to call for help. The cop was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Hernandez's death marks the first of an officer in the line of duty for the Las Cruces Police Department.
The homeless man's criminal history included a 2015 conviction for kidnapping and aggravated battery with great bodily harm against a household member, which resulted in a prison sentence. Silva violated his probation multiple times and was sent back to prison in the following years, Story said.
Hernandez was a two-year veteran of the Las Cruces police force, having graduated from the academy in June 2022 with the department's largest graduating class.
Police do not plan to recommend charges against the witness, who has not been identified, for gunning down Silva.

No they don't. these things don't happen very often at all, and being a cop isn't even a top 10 dangerous job in america. on top of that many cop deaths can be completely avoided by using tact and patience. In recent history by far the biggest killer of on duty cops is covid, not dangerous criminals.
Cops are on edge and shoot fast because they're fucking cowards and are indoctrinated to think theres a violent criminal in every car waiting to shoot them and they treat law abiding citizens like guilty criminals.

For those who think cops are the problem… According to https://heyjackass.com/ 1180 people have been shot In Chicago to date this year. The cops did 5 of those shootings and have had 4 officers shot this year…. If you go around saying all cops should be killed you're no better than a racist. Wow. A picture says a thousand words. He obviously hired on at a later age, being 35 yrs old and 2 years in service. I'm assuming he didn't work as an officer previous to this 2 year stint.
I hate to "Monday morning QB", but I wonder if his inexperience cost him his life. Just compare this to that video on here where the officer has an individual pulled over on a residential street. A car pulls up alongside the officer, stops and starts, gets a few feet beyond the officer, whereby the guy jumps out of his vehicle with a weapon (I believe an a or hammer), turns and runs towards the officer. This officer was older, lots more years on the force, alot more experience. He immediately had his weapon out and unloaded on the guy, stopping him dead in his tracks a mere foot or two from himself. It was actually textbook and I'm certain they're showing this video in police academies across the US. Very similar scenarios, unfortunately, very different outcomes.

You really do run the risk of letting a murderer run loose in public if you yourself die. Some people aren't able to make the connection that "its just me right now, only I can save myself." There are so many variabilities outside of “keep your hand on your gun”, why wasn't there partnered officers there, the officer may not have known the man was experiencing psychosis, that knife was well concealed, the officer stumbled trying to gain distance.
There's something called the 21 foot rule, a theory and practice I think all police and even civilians should know. If there is an attacker within 21 feet of an officer and charges, there is a high likelihood the attacker could reach the officer before he is able to unholster his firearm.
It's just an outright tragedy. The bystanders efforts are beyond commendable, and an unfortunate loss of Officer Hernandez and for the men there defending and rendering aid

I'm incredibly surprised the police released this of their own accord. It doesn't even look like it was at the behest of a FOI request.
This is why becoming complacent is a death sentence for so many American LEOs. Just look at how casually the police officer closes the gap with the anti-social vagrant. Quite literally every step he took towards the suspect lowered his chances of survival exponentially, up until he had next to zero chance of unholstering his weapon and putting shots down. It's been proven that the minimum distance you need to draw a holstered firearm and put effective shots down range against somebody charging you with a bladed instrument is roughly 17-20 feet.
