Los Angeles police officers fatally shot a man on a busy stretch of Hollywood Boulevard after receiving multiple 911 calls about a suspect matching the man’s description brandishing a gun on the block, police said.
The man was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead because of his injuries.

The "gun" he had was a lighter. But he did have a knife which is what he was pointing at them with when the police opened fire. If you take the link, it has overhead photos of the man. More information about the shooting as well.

Right, but it’s misleading to say it ‘that ‘gun’ was a lighter’. It implies that the object was lighter shaped, and not a gun.
The important aspect is whether or not the object appeared to be a gun, and in this case, it did.

I said the gun he had was a lighter, not that it was a lighter gun implying it's weight. You would use it to light cigarettes. But if you look at what he is pointing at them in the twitter pics, it's the knife. And I'm not saying what they did was wrong, also not saying it was right. Just observing what I see. But if I confused you with my wording. Sorry I guess.

This is just a theory on my part but here goes. The man was probably carrying the lighter that is shaped like a gun around lighting cigarettes, weed, or whatever. People probably saw it and thought it was real and called the cops. Cops respond thinking he has a real gun. He pulls the open blade on them, and thinking it's the gun they shoot him down. And in all fairness to the situation, I'd have shot his ass too. A big black shiny metal object being pointed at me that could be a barrel of a handgun... Crimson mist will follow.
