Suspect gets shot by huntington officer after charging at him

Huntington, West Virginia — On July 3, 2023, Huntington Police Corporal Keith McSweeney responded to a call around 1:40 p.m. in the 400 block of 14th Street in Huntington. Police said at that time the suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Ahmad Abdullah, of Detroit, Michigan, was threatening to shoot the caller and “blow up” a house in the area. The bodycam footage shows the suspect on the ground in a corner outside the building under the gas meter. McSweeney repeatedly asked Abdullah to show his hands after arriving on scene. Abdullah claimed to have a gun and proceeded to charge the McSweeney. According to Huntington Police, at that point, McSweeney then shot the suspect and began providing medical aid to the man until EMS personnel arrived. Abdullah was taken to a local hospital where he later died. The officer was not injured. It was initially believed that Abdullah may have been in possession of a gun, however, investigators said he did not, the news release said. McSweeney was placed on leave as the investigation began, but has since been cleared to return to work.
