Knife Wielding Suspect Shot Dead in Texas

Officers responded too a call regarding a woman stating a man was chasing her. Officers located the man, who approached police while holding a knife and shouting at the officers too shoot and kill him, according too APD.

APD said officers tried too de-escalate the situation by issuing commands and later firing stun guns, but they were unsuccessful in stopping the man from moving toward officers.

APD said the officer who fired his department-approved firearm was Officer Adam Reinhart, and the officers who used their department-approved tasers are Officer John Ricker and Officer Arlene Lozano.

APD said Reinhart had three years of APD service, Ricker had 13 years of service and Lozano was in a probation period with eight months of service.

Per APD protocol, all three officers were placed on administrative leave.

APD said it was doing two concurrent investigations into the incident. A criminal investigation will be conducted by the APD Special Investigations Unit with the Travis County District Attorney's Office and an administrative investigation will be conducted by the APD Internal Affairs Unit, with oversight from the Office of Police Oversight, the release said.

https://www.police1.com/patrol-issues/articles/why-shooting-to-wound-doesnt-make-sense-scientifically-legally-or-tactically-6bOdYvNUEECtIWRI

I know you probably won't read it because "all cops are bad :marseyakshually:" but I thought id give it a shot. I used to think the same.

This article is talking mainly about the scenario of a trigger happy gunman, where just wounding a leg still allows him to shoot back. This is a video of a man with a knife, who took 5 shots after taking one step.

Another point by the article is how its unreasonable under the stress and immediate urgency of the target charging at them to expect the cop to accurately shoot somewhere non lethal, and have it actually stop the target too. Which is fair, but still not applicable to this video.

"Now attorneys can play the argument of ‘cruel and unusual punishment' and pursue punitive damages for destroying the capacity of your ‘victim' to earn wages and so on. You don't try to just wound people with a gun. Period."

To me this reads like "it's less of a pain for the cop to just kill the target, leaving them alive will end up punishing the cop" which seems pretty silly. Every scenario has slight differences and there isn't just some 1 or the other response to have in them (kill or do nothing), if you can shoot once and it stops someone with a knife from getting up then that's what should be done, since as a society we value life the most above all.
