Officers with the San Leandro police department shot and killed a man armed with a bat Saturday afternoon inside of a Walmart store, according to Lieutenant Ted Henderson with the San Leandro Police Department.

The shooting took place just inside of the entrance of the Walmart, located at 1555 Hesperian Blvd.

Police were responding to a report of a man branishing a bat. While responding, police say they received reports that the man was now possibly attempting a robbery.

Once officers arrived, they determined that the man did not commit a robbery, however officers attempted to take the man into custody. Henderson could not offer an answer on why police were attempting to detain the man.

Two officers deployed their Tasers, which they say did not have an effect.

Investigators closed the scene, which is inside this San Leandro Walmart store. April 18, 2020.

A 20-year veteran officer then shot the man one time, killing him.

Police did not name the man who was killed, but they did identify him as black.

Officers from various agencies are at the scene, including the Alameda County Sheriff's Department, and the California Highway Patrol.

Damn he really changed his tune there when that bullet started to make his blood pressure drop because you know… massive hemorrhage. He dropped the bat and went ahhh! What a way to go out.

Why does it say the tazer didnt work when they used it after they shot him… like arent you supposed to taze first shoot later? Cuz he immediately pulled his gun not his tazer, and the second cop only took out his tazer after the cop shot him

They tased him twice once before gunshot that on didn't do anything but piss him off. Then the second was after he got shot in the chest and started losing blood his blood pressure was already dropping he would've went down regardless of the second taser

Really weird reading on the report the tasers supposedly didn't have any effect and at the same time seeing him go limp in an instant on the video.

Idk, a bat is not a knife, don't see how the numerous officers were in danger warranting the use of deadly force. Just happy not to live in america I guess

To americans getting defensive on police killings videos, chill out. Not saying the officer isn't defending himself, just that all societies aren't this violent.

You guys seem to have forgotten the actual weight of the use of deadly force, there are many ways to defuse a situation like this one that don't involve unloading deadly weapons. Considering the sheer number of law enforcement, the absence of firearms and blades on the suspect, it's reasonable to question the course of action, but you guys seem to accept any pretense to unload any gun

The use of deadly force was totally justified here though. Just because the suspect was less armed than having a knife doesn't mean deadly force wasn't appropriate. It's possible that if the suspect was completely unarmed that if the officer was in enough immediate danger deadly force would still be appropriate. You say multiple officers but initially it was just a one on one encounter until back up arrives which is after the first taser deployment and gun shot.

Can I swing a bat at your head? Promise you won't be in danger because it's not deadly
