DALHART, Texas βΒ Body camera footage capturing officersβ attempts to diffuse an increasinglyΒ violent confrontation at the scene of a domestic disturbance call has been released following a grand jury decision not to indict an officer involved.
Officers Annika Schaffner, Rudy Corrales and Sgt. Eloy Duran responded to the scene on a domestic violence call.
36-year-old Johnny Joseph Martinez confronted the officers at the residence β threatening them with a chair and multiple knives as police attempted to take him into custody inside the homeβs kitchen. At one point, Martinez held a can opener to his own throat.
The scene forced officers to retreat to the outside of the building. Sgt. Duran closed the door behind them β putting a barrier between the officers and Martinez.
Martinez then began banging on the doorβs window, which shattered β sending glass into Duranβs face and temporarily blinding him.
The suspect then reached through the door and attempted to grab Duran. Officer Corrales then fired five shots, all of which struck Martinez. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
A grand jury cleared Officer Corrales Wednesday in connection to the shooting.
