Police shoot man with knife

I thought this ignorant argument would be done with by now.

Knives dont work that way.

The problem with tasers is they aren't reliable. You need both prongs to make a connection, which is hard enough to manage alone but with the clothes that guy was wearing there was almost no chance of the barbs being able to pierce through. Tasers are nice when they work, but 99% of the time you can't rely on them actually doing anything, it's a good way to end up dead yourself.

In all honesty, I think the officers handled the situation mostly alright. The two biggest issues are that they didn't do a great job trying to talk and de-escalate the situation. Second they let the guy get way to close before shooting. The general rule of thumb is an average person can close the distance of 15-20 feet in roughly 1-2 seconds, and it takes an average person .25 seconds to react. There's a really high chance if that guy wanted to charge them and stab one of the officers that he could've done so had they not hit center of mass. The issuing orders after he was down is just standard procedure, especially if the guy is still alive/holding the knife. They don't know how much fight he has left, so if he still has it on him what's stopping the guy from stabbing one of the officers once they begin rendering aide.

It's not a perfect way to handle the situation, but overall I'd still give the officers a passing grade. They didn't do anything egregiously out of line aside from putting themselves at unnecessary risk.

Yes, that could have been handled better, but I think that guy was going to make them kill him no matter what..... it was a suicide.

Its all procedure because at one point in history, a man successfully faked dead with a knife in hand then turned on the cops when they were in range. So now every cop has to do it this way.
