while it always varies from person to person, I usually do it when I get completely emotionally overwhelmed and need to do something physical to release that energy and clear my mind. Beforehand, my mind is usually stuck in a loop of going over all the problems in my life and the people I hurt, I get distressed to the point of shaking, but afterwards, my mind feels calm and clear.

One could figure the thoughts/feelings would be overwhelming to say the least. Over time, it might become almost routine, losing it's impact, therefore not feeling as it may have used to. Nonetheless it's important to remember that everyone's different, and understanding without first-hand experience isn't straightforward.
