There are many reasons why people do this. Sexual pleasure/depression/comfort/for fun. a lot of people who sh get addicted to it and then they start cutting shapes and pieces off for the scar afterwords. you start small and then you feel that you must go deeper and bigger. everyone is different I do not know this guys reasoning for this, you will have to ask someone personally about why they do it too understand..
