I doubt compliance would have saved him in this case, they didn't hesitate to kill him, on the contrary they ambushed him, which indicates that they would have killed him regardless. Generally you are right, though, it is better to comply, unfortunatly it won't save you in every situation. Sometimes you are just doomed, which is hard to accept :(
