In places like that? Yeah, kinda have to be. World would eat you up otherwise. Sure you'd get bullied relentlessly by these animals, but you could get out and be more successful than any of them could ever dream of. Unfortunately, they have no father figures and their idols are the drug dealers driving a shitty used Benz that end up dead or in jail by the time they're 23.

I get where you're coming from. It's easy to avoid this by simply studying and doing what you have to in terms of academics. If my life were slightly different, I would have absolutely been a drug dealer or gangbanger. A lot of the time, people don't have a choice. They gotta get money in and food on the table and keep heat n lights on. Does this excuse their actions? No, definitely not. There's no good reason to be keeping people hooked on drugs or beget violence. But it is an explanation as to why people turn to this type of life. Even petty crime can be a last resort for people as privileged as I am. I'm white passing, I don't look mixed at all until around the summer when I'm outside more. Its moreso where you grow up and what you're taught that defines your outlook on life and that's what influences your path.
Tl;Dr - Yes, you can study and get to a better place academically or athletically. But for a lot of people, that's not an option, and they have no choice but to turn to these crimes. It's sad cases all around when you think about it. And for those people, I just wish they find something better someday.
