Except for Argentina, every mainland country in Latin America has a higher homicide rate than the North American countries of Canada and the US. Why?
Comparatively high poverty rates
Corruption
Lack of consistent public education standards
Gang culture
the drug trade / War on Drugs (which ties into the previous point a lot)
Lack of effective social outreach programs
Disinterested governments who prefer to focus on promoting national economic growth over basic living standards.
Lack of decent, well enforced and regulated social welfare programs to provide necessary safety nets to prevent individuals & families from turning to crime to subsist.

I don't know about you though but - isn't Uruguay deserved to be in the same place where Argentina at - y'know - both being more safe rather than other countries in LATAM? Just asking, and curious.

Argentina's homicide rate in 2022 was 4.3 cases per 100,000 people
In 2023, Uruguay's homicide rate was around 11.2 homicides per 100,000 people
Those are the stats I could find. Of course, any statistics a government puts out should be taken with a grain of salt.
