Florida Woman Commits Suicide by Cop

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — One woman is dead after she was shot by two officers on Jacksonville's Northside Saturday evening, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

JSO said at 5:13 p.m., Officer E. Meckling responded to a dispute between two roommates in the 1300 block of Golfair Boulevard. The dispute reportedly had to do with stolen medication, according to JSO.

When Meckling arrived at the residence, police said Leah Baker, 29, answered the door while holding a butcher knife. JSO said Baker swung the knife at Meckling, stabbing her in the arm. Meckling then called for backup and told Baker to drop the knife.

JSO said Baker did not follow the command and tried to attack Meckling again. Meckling then fired several rounds at Baker in an effort to stop her.

An off-duty officer named JC Nobles passed by the scene and stopped to assist Meckling. JSO said Nobles also told Baker to drop the knife but that Baker did not follow the command and instead swung at him as well. That's when Nobles also fired several rounds at Baker.

Baker was then rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. Meckling was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening injury.

Nobles has worked with JSO for 18 years and the incident marks his fifth officer-involved shooting. Meckling has worked with JSO for about a year and the incident marks her first officer-involved shooting.

sure, if the cop had more distance and knew sooner the lady had a knife. she came out charging from a dark room with a big knife. the cops backward steps are down towards stairs so she's immediately in a position of disadvantage with the lady charging with the knife. looked like cop tried to create distance between her and knife lady, while trying to pull out gun. once knife lady came out charging with the knife, use of lethal force is warranted. just saw another video where the knife hit the person in the jugular and they dropped dead within 10 seconds so i understand the first thought being to use a gun for stopping power to knife lady charging vs. trying to use a taser that may not sotp the lady charging if shes high on drugs, leading to cop potentially getting stabbed in a fatal manner
