You'd be surprised - you can even legally own a .50 cal in the UK.
Trouble is there are very few ranges that are safe to use them and you would need to be part of a club/range to be considered. As for smaller calibres the main limiting factor is magazine size. Automatic or semi automatic shotguns for example are limited to 3 shell capacity and i'm fairly sure other long guns have the same restriction - Not sure about handguns however in order for them to be legal they need a long barrel/stock so they can't be easily concealed.
