Guys, why is this post getting so many downvotes? What did I do wrong?

Because of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and the secrecy of Spec-Ops snipers, I couldn’t find much info on this besides that it takes place in the new war. (I could be wrong)

Who knows whether or not it is true, but I have read that the Russians hadn't really been supplied with any thermal or infrared optics so they basically avoid fighting at night at all ... whereas the Ukrainians clearly have enough of such equipment to launch full blown assaults on Russian positions at night.

Would seem odd seeing as the Russians have had said equipment in one form or another for just about as long as any other nation ... even if it were a generation or two outdated.

While it may be too expensive to equip individual soldiers with thermals they are on many modern vehicles, planes, helicopters and drones. And it only takes one to get an overview and detect incoming adversaries. So I'm not sure how this could be true. But Russians have shocked the world with so much stupidity that nothing is impossible at this point.

The best fight is the one you can avoid. Having a long distance rifle with the right toys to make it effective at long ranges and practicing with it is a good strategy if you want to stay alive if shit ever were to hit the fan. You can take out threats before they even realize they are a threat**

**this applies to war tactics, not self-defense.

Especially if you have IR Thermal!

If you can afford them, those toys are not cheap for some very fucked up reasons. But yes. Even if you can’t afford them you should practice long distance shooting. It’s a different game altogether.

There's a fantastic public range (DNR-run I believe) about an hour south of me that has pretty long rifle ranges ... with golf carts to check and set targets. I think they even do long range classes sometimes.

I have some rifles that would be capable, but they're all ye-olde rifles that I haven't even zeroed. One doesn't even have a scope mounted yet. All old sporter M1917s, at least that even have scope mounts.

I should really build a 6.5 Creedmoor AR or something eventually.

Are those produced for the civilian market at all? I'm actually somewhat confused as to why elements of the military adopted it to begin with. It sounds like it is just a regular modern AR with a nice barrel? They added free float handguards for accuracy, but the civilian market has already been using those for many years anyway. I imagine my existing ARs are not much different in terms of performance, even off the shelf with the OEM parts.

Why an AR? Semis are never as accurate as bolt action. If you want to use it long range you need all the accuracy you can get. Question is: can you afford the thermal to go with it?

With a semi you can perform quick follow-up shots. Plus, one of the best sniper rifles in the world, the M82A1, is a semi.

A good AR built with the right parts is a sub minute gun, and a lot cheaper than a bolt gun of similar ability (besides maybe something like a Ruger Precision). 20-30 years ago, that might have still been true of bolt guns. Not anymore.

Bolt guns are more fun though, of course.
