Incident Details:
Occurred in São José Operário, a neighborhood in Manaus, Brazil, on Tuesday (9th, October 2018).
Involved a traffic dispute between military police (PM) soldier (identity not released due to fear of persecussion from big crime organizations in Manaus like CV and FDN) and a motorcyclist, Gabriel Rodrigues Rego.
The PM soldier shot the motorcyclist in the back during the traffic altercation and hit im in the cervical spine.
As a result Gabriel Rodrigues Rego, aged 38, is at risk of paralysis due to the gunshot.
He is currently in critical condition at the João Lúcio Hospital - east of the capital.
The traffic dispute was captured on the motorcyclist's helmet camera.
Police used the footage to identify the vehicle and locate the involved PM soldier that initially fled the scene.
The soldier confessed to shooting the motorcyclist during an interrogation at the 9th Integrated Police District (DIP) Office.
A .38 caliber revolver with five rounds was seized from the PM soldier. The revolver will undergo forensic examination but the missing bullets fit the same form found in the x-rays.
The PM soldier has been indicted for attempted homicide but the PM and his attorney claimed self-defense while the Investigative Office told press that self-defense can be ruled out due to video evidence.
