SUV crashes head on into a group of cyclists. Florida, USA 4 January 2024

Delray Beach Fire Rescue helped respond to a crash involving an SUV and six bicyclists Thursday morning.

The crash happened on the 2800 Block of North Ocean Boulevard in Gulf Stream around 6:45 a.m.

All six bicyclists were hospitalized, three of them via trauma alert. The driver of the SUV was also taken to the hospital. The conditions of the people hurt are unknown.

That area of North Ocean Boulevard was closed until about 11:20 a.m.

The Florida Highway Patrol and Gulf Stream Police Department are leading the investigation. Investigators have not shared what led up to the crash.

Bicyclists who take this route tell WPBF 25 News they're always thinking about the possibility of a crash like this.

Carol Gauvrau of Canada rode his bicycle on this route on Thursday after the crash. He turned around to head towards bike lanes once he found out about the crash.

"I feel not safe because the road is not safe. I think I'll turn around,” Gauvrau said. "Next time I'll check the road before to make sure there's room enough for biking."

Joe Parkinson, who is also from Canada, was biking this route shortly after the crash.

He says he had an incident of his own while cycling with his wife a few years ago, a couple miles north of Thursday's crash.

"My wife came out with me once. She was clipped, not enough to not her over or anything, and then that stopped her from riding here,” Parkinson said.

However, he says he'll continue to ride in this area, though he wishes there were bike lanes on this part of North Ocean Boulevard. He says he also wishes the sides of the roadway were better maintained. This area of the road is maintained by the state.

"The sides of the road are dangerous,” Parkinson said.
