The spinal cord is located towards the rear of the neck, within the spinal canal formed by the vertebrae of the neck (cervical spine). It is protected by the bony structures of the vertebrae and is surrounded by cerebrospinal fluid.

Any beheading from the front would first cut the throat and may be very painful for a while.
