It's been confirmed that soap actor Johnny Wactor was shot and killed when he interrupted 3 people trying to steal the catalytic converter from his car.
Wactor was walking back to his car after finishing work at a bar. He saw people working on his car, and asked if he was being towed.
A masked gunman turned and shot him.
Police are now hunting the murderer and his co-conspirators, although cops haven't released any descriptions yet of the thieves or their car.
Catalytic converter theft has become common in the USA, Canada and other countries because the part can be quickly cut from under a car, and sells for quite a bit of money.
I've heard of some people who have had the converter stolen 7 times. Thieves sneak under your car with an electric saw and can be gone in a couple of minutes.
And these essential pieces of your car can cost thousands to replace.
Many converters cost $3,000 to replace, with some car model converters costing $4,000 or more.
They help reduce car exhaust pollution.
