I'm American and love lightning so fucking much. Thunder is my favorite thing on Earth, I wish I could plan a trip to see lightning and thunder.

Realest thing someone has ever said here. Where I'm at, it never storms and barley rains

That is such a damn shame. I saw/felt a thunder and lightning storm when I was in Florida once that shook the little hotel I was staying at in the most incredible way, and the lightning did this thing: It cracked all across the sky, like you could hear electricity, like a sizzle/pop/cracking sound across the whole damn sky when this tree trunk sized lighting branched out everywhere, the branches were SO THICK, and it took its time doing it, it would just cover the sky in these branching trees of lightning everywhere. And then...a good moment later, this enormous BOOM that would just about make you shit your pants, it was so powerful, it made you feel like you were in danger, but you know you're safe. This continued for hours. I stood by the (nearly) floor to ceiling windows and watched with all the lights off for the whole storm. It's the best thing I have ever seen in my life and I would go back and see more of it if I could only just plan it somehow. Greatest thing I have ever witnessed.

That literally sounds so amazing. I've never experienced anything like that. Only cool thing I went through was a hurricane but I was little. Damnnn imagine the photos if you got some. You should definitely go back to where you saw that

YES I was at my uncles house and he has huge glass doors and was living right beside a dock, so when it hit the water came up and it was real cool seeing water so high with glass doors

Even as a child I was fascinated by lightening storms. Growing up surrounded by fields and heavily wooded areas made for some incredibly close and powerful lightening strikes - I remember a tree being almost completely destroyed, all the branches and foliage were totally decapitated from the main trunk, and where they'd separated was left in the perfect silhouette of a crow's head - the tree even became known as The Crow's Head, eye socket, beak and even charred black - not many kids I knew or have known were ever drawn to lightening like I was, and to then spend a life working with electricity, sonar and the sciences - yet meeting old friends I grew up with many have said over the years “I always knew you'd end up being “some kind of mad scientist, or soldier (I was a young Scout, then an Air cadet, then a soldier) or an inventor, (I burnt down the shed aged 11 ‘inventing stuff' from fireworks mostly) or ‘something'…..” - yeah, go figure - definitely ‘something' - that was always on the cards. 🤷‍♂️

The sheer power of nature though - still fascinates even today. Well it did yesteryear. Don't see much in city's though to be fair…… If only we knew as a kid, just how amazing being a kid was, wishing we were ‘grown up' the whole time, and being they were the best days of our short live's - who wouldn't go back?
