Jain monks at the end of their lives (when they lose motor skills) practice sallekhana( starvation to death) to attain enlightenment but here the presence of a Buddha statue is confusing maybe they also started it as both Buddhism and Jainism religions are very similar

The 23rd & 24th Jains were contemporaries of Buddha.

There is a similar practice in Buddhism so, the statue makes sense if this individual was a Buddhist monk (?).
