Euthanasia and assisted suicide

Personally? I think anyone who wants to die should be allowed to do so.

Practically? It's a very nuanced issue. There is the general concept of physicians to do no harm. Suicide is a form of harm (resulting in the death of the patient). Thus, there are ethical concerns for any physician intending to assist in a patient's death. Even if a physician overcomes their personal ethical barrier and believe assisted suicide is fine, there becomes an issue of consent. Assisted suicide presumes that the patient consents to the physician's involvement (if patient's consent is not present, then it's simply murder). However, there becomes the issue of whether or not someone who is suicidal can provide actual consent. Society holds that those in certain mental states (whether developmental delay, immaturity, or mental illness) cannot give valid legal consent. Arguably, someone who is in such a physical state (i.e.pain) or mental state (e.g. depression) is not in their right mind and, thus, is not capable of providing valid consent to be euthanized.

I am all for it if the person is terminally ill. If the patient has ALS, CJD, Rabies, non operable cancers, etc I don't see why they should be forced to suffer if they are ready to go. With proper consent, it shouldn't be an issue. I've seen people dying of terminal illness, it's not pretty. I rather die peacefully than being skin and bones laying in a hospital bed wearing diapers.

Now the rest is when it gets a little complicated. I really don't agree with it if the person has something that can be treated, managed, or cured. Mental illness MOST OF THE TIME falls into this category. When I hear about depressed people going through with euthanasia it makes me sad tbh. Being suicidal makes you do some stupid shit. They shouldn't be allowed to provide consent.

None of it is remotely acceptable and anyone who suggests otherwise is either willfully stupid or an amoral waste of oxygen.
