Yes healthcare is expensive.
But every citizen has more disposable income, for most people the amount of additional disposable income they receive over their career (compared to a country with free universal healthcare like the UK, or Sweden) is far more than a few ambulance rides and injuries. Smart people will save their money in some form for a rainy day like this, but of course that's easier said than done, God forbid placing financial responsibility onto the shoulders of the masses!
