Being risk averse and being more competent are not the same thing.
Being risk averse might mean you're less likely to drive 120 MPH because you're late for work, but it also means that you might be less likely to drive 120 MPH when you're trying to get your ambulance to the scene of an accident.
You're trying to say that taking less risks makes you a better driver, and while I see your point, it's also not valid, at least not in all cases.

Men, on average, drive more miles than women. That includes going to and from work, at work, and recreational use. That heavily skews the statistics. Obviously if there's way more men on the road at any given time, for longer periods of time, then they're going to be in the majority for crashes.
As well as this, on average, men use alcohol in general, which contributes to drunk driving, which also skews the statistics. Men are also less likely to use seatbelts, increasing the rate at which the crash is fatal.
On the flip side, women are typically less responsive to hazards. They, on average, react slower. They judge braking distances and distance significantly worse. Since they drive less, on average, they're less accustomed to their hardware.
In terms of personal experience, I work in the medical field, and most people I've treated for preventable car related injuries are women.
