CHILD WARNING EFFORTPOST Myra Hindley and Ian Brady - Moors murders

Myra Hindley and Ian Brady were a notorious British serial killer couple who were responsible for the murders of several children in the 1960s, which became known as the "Moors Murders"

.Myra Hindley and Ian Brady met in 1961 and began a relationship. Together, they committed a series of heinous crimes between 1963 and 1965, targeting young victims between the ages of 10 and 17. They would lure their victims, sexually abuse them, and then brutally murder them, often burying the bodies on the Saddleworth Moor in Greater Manchester. The victims of the Moors Murders were:

1.Pauline Reade (age 16, disappeared in 1963)

2.John Kilbride (age 12, murdered in 1963)

3.Keith Bennett (age 12, disappeared in 1964)

4.Lesley Ann Downey (age 10, murdered in 1964)

5.Edward Evans (age 17, murdered in 1965)

Hindley and Brady's crimes were discovered in 1965 when one of their victims was found.

They were both convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. Hindley's sentence was later increased to a whole life term, while Brady was given a whole life sentence.

Ian Brady:

  • Born in 1938 in Glasgow, Scotland

  • Had a troubled childhood and youth, with a history of petty crimes and violence

  • Developed a fascination with Nazism, the occult, and serial killers

  • Met Myra Hindley in 1961 and they began a relationship

  • Masterminded the Moors Murders, committing 5 savage killings between 1963-1965

  • Convicted of 3 murders in 1966 and sentenced to life imprisonment

  • Spent over 50 years in prison until his death in 2017 at the age of 79

Myra Hindley:

  • Born in 1942 in Manchester, England

  • Had a difficult upbringing and was described as a loner in her youth

  • Met Ian Brady in 1961 and became his accomplice in the Moors Murders

  • Actively participated in the abduction, sexual abuse, and murders of the victims

  • Convicted of 2 murders in 1966 and sentenced to life imprisonment

  • Spent over 35 years in prison, with several failed parole attempts, until her death in 2002 at the age of 60

Together, Hindley and Brady became known as the "Moors Murderers" for their heinous crimes on the Saddleworth Moor in northern England. They were both described as having a dark fascination with death and evil, and their crimes shocked and horrified the nation.

Even after their convictions, Hindley and Brady remained unrepentant, with Brady in particular continuing to taunt the victims' families and refuse to reveal the location of the remains of one of the victims, Keith Bennett.

4.Lesley Ann Downey (murdered in 1964) - Her body was discovered on the Moor in 1965, shortly after the crimes were revealed.

5.Edward Evans (murdered in 1965) - His body was not buried on the Moor, as he was killed inside Brady and Hindley's home.

The "Myra" portrait was exhibited at the Sensation exhibition at the Royal Academy of Art in London in 1997. The exhibition featured works by the Young British Artists (YBA) group, which was known for producing provocative and often shocking artworks. The "Myra" portrait immediately caused outrage and controversy when it was unveiled. Many found the use of children's handprints to create Hindley's face to be deeply disturbing and disrespectful to the victims of the Moors Murders.Relatives of the victims protested the exhibition, with some even throwing eggs at the painting. There were calls for the artwork to be removed, and the Royal Academy faced significant backlash for including it in the exhibition.
