Many men go through an early life phase of being attracted to BPD hoes out of a misplaced sense of heroism or nobility. It activates an urge to rescue the "damsel in distress", the ultimate lesson being of course, that she can't be rescued and you get ruined in the process.
This is just an immature expression of a fundamentally healthy impulse. When channeled in a mature way, it's completely possible to be a heroic force in a woman's life - not by finding someone incapable, but someone who stands to really benefit from qualities that you possess that she may not.
