A man accused of stealing commits suicide by jumping into Lagos Lagoon, Nigeria

Lagos Island, Lagos, Nigeria - Oct 2022

A yet-to-be-identified man has been captured in a viral video jumping into a river in Lagos State after he was reportedly accused of stealing.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the man took his life on Saturday night at the Idumota Bridge, Lagos Island.

A Facebook user, Ngozi Blessing, shared videos of when the man was addressing some onlookers and the moment he jumped into the river.

Blessing, in the post, alleged that the man took to suicide because he was framed for stealing a huge amount of money, which he denied knowledge of.

In a text accompanying the video, Blessing wrote: “He was saying in oyinbo that they framed him that he stole a huge of money which he did not and they said they give him 24 hours to refund the money and he did not steal and for him to eat once in a day is a problem that where did he want to get that kind of money from within 24 hours so he is tired of life and he jumped down the bridge, it happened yesterday night at Idumota bridge in Lagos island. I am tired of this country the man just wasted his life”.

Our correspondent observed that the man in one of the videos explained to onlookers that he decided to give up his life because he was frustrated after being accused of stealing money he cannot afford to pay back.

The man lamented that despite going to the Police station to prove his innocence, he was still asked to look for a way to repay the money.

The man was captured to have said, “Where I was living, they accused me of stealing, I told them I am not the one that stole it. I was arrested by the police and I was asked to say my side of the story. Despite that, they still threatened to kill me.”

All pleas by onlookers to discourage the man from committing suicide failed, as he dived into the river.

How can you die from jumping into water? I might be a bit dumb, can someone explain?

I think it's cause the impact with the surface of the water, you can be injured being unable to swim, so you drown

Nah man, that was like 20 feet, at MOST. You could probably belly flop that, and be fine.

I was thinking about that but it doesn’t look that high up, I also thought that maybe the currents pulled him under

How does that work though? Can you die if the water is murky? Like I get a flood where there is a lot of dirt and earth but it’s still swimmable. I don’t want to argue with you, I just want to know in case I’m faced with this situation in real life.

Most likely due to sticks and logs getting stuck in the mud at the bottom, catching more getting swept along. My guess is he got snagged on a log or something and got pulled under, or there was a small rapid going over a ledge that sucked him under.

Drowning is when you breathe in hydrogen with your oxygen.

Hope that helps.

Don’t forget to breathe oxygen, you don’t want to get brain damage like last time buddy

Currents. You ever been on a big river with a kayak or something? A question I don't need to ask, because if you had you wouldn't wonder how it's possible to drown in a big river like this.

Yeah, I’ve never been kayaking but what you said makes sense. I’ve seen people jumping into rivers but they didn’t have strong currents. Nice one man, you might have saved my life
