I think by the way he's holding his arms that he's trying to slow the fall rather than catch them but it's very hard to judge a moving target falling from straight above and he got more than he bargained for. Just my guess.

Wonder if he lived… didn’t really catch all of the momentum, and you can see the jumper kinda really only landed half on him with their legs and maybe lower torso. Either way they got spun and landed head first into the ground pretty hard and somewhat knocked the dude off to the side a little, but he still caught those legs to the head pretty good.

I just saw this yesterday somewhere else. Iirc that was not a jumper. It was a little girl (12?) who fell and the guy tried to catch her. She did not survive but i think the guy did.
