Of the 296 passengers and crew on board, 112 died during the accident, while 184 people survived. 13 of the passengers were uninjured. It was the deadliest single-aircraft accident in the history of United Airlines. Most were killed by injuries sustained during the multiple impacts, but 35 people in the middle fuselage section directly above the fuel tanks died from smoke inhalation in the post-crash fire. Of those, 24 had no traumatic blunt-force injuries. The majority of the 184 survivors were seated behind first class and ahead of the wings. Many passengers were able to walk out through the ruptures to the structure.

Thankfully they didn't have an engine fall off. That never ends well

American Airlines Flight 191. Fun fact, there was another Flight 191 crash operated by Delta Air Lines

And it was a good thing the front didn't fall off.

That's a pretty neat life experience to have, experiencing a plane crash with no injury whatsoever. Assuming you don't get traumatized that is.

Would make you really scared to ever get on a plane again.

"Despite the fatalities, the accident is considered a good example of successful crew resource management. A majority of those aboard survived; experienced test pilots in simulators were unable to reproduce a survivable landing. It has been termed "The Impossible Landing" as it is considered one of the most impressive landings ever performed in the history of aviation."

Massive respect to the pilot for managing to save the situation and save some lives.

If you are impressed by that, check out Flight 961's story, the pilot managed to perform a sort of controlled crash landing on water WHILE fighting hijackers in the cockpit, saving dozens of lives.

Yeah must be pretty fucking hard to land a plane after it does a Nollie 360 flip into a board slide.. Definitely not luck or anything.

Just imagine if they had attempted the Stale Fish Maneuver!

The amazing part is that people actually survive these.

This is why Ill never fly on a DC-10, and Thank God some airlines stopped using them

The beginning of the end for McDonnell Douglas was this. The L1011 was not far on design from the DC-10.

iirc, all of the pilots who tried to land this plane in post accident recreations of the accident were COMPLETELY unable to come close to this good a landing. Almost complete loss of ability to control the aircraft because of control failure, iirc

even if you survive initial crash you gotta wait for everyone in front of you to get overhead bags

if this was on the way to someone's holiday and they survived I wonder how they were able to fly back I feel you would be traumatised and stay away from planes but u need to go home 🏡

I'm sure most rent a car but I've heard of cases where the survivors go ahead and catch another flight
