I had to read the article to make sure she didn't just die after. Still could have been severely injured.
When I was a kid my bike was hit by a car and I went flying and bouncing. I was not able to get up for a while on account of shock or something. Nothing was broken, but I was just flopping like a fish trying to get up and cussing up a storm in denial that I was hurt. I couldn't feel any pain until it wore off. Then I was in a lot of pain, a LOT!
I have to give her credit for getting out of there quickly. The way she lifted her shirt makes me think that she was feeling something. I hope the child wasn't injured too badly as well.

My own experience is when I cut off a bit of the top of my thumb with one of those electric planing benches. Was at the end of the day and had my mind on going home, fucked up and got my thumb in the rotating knives and got a small part cut clean off, didn't feel a thing until I was at the doctors' office probably 50 minutes later and was told to clean it under the tap. Felt like I was on coke for 50 minutes, couldn't keep my mouth shut and sit still the adrenaline rush was quite intense. Never had something close to as bad as this or your accident though.

Hope thumb is still mostly there. Planers are unforgiving and absolutely destroy the flesh they take.
Edit: I was thinking of jointers but I suppose planers are similar. Have both in my shed that my husband uses. Afraid of both too...

Yea didn't cut enough off for it not to heal completely fortunately. Still feels a bit weird though but my thumb is 100% there again. Learned my lesson working with those machines while tired though, never again 😅

I have worked construction and would do a lot more around the house if I weren't afraid of the machines. Haha
It is weird because my dad was a carpenter and contractor, my husband as well. I have been on plenty of sites and done trim and such but am still scared of certain tools!

Sometimes fear is counterprodictive.
Worse than the tools for me is coming down the damn ladder or being on an incline. For fucks sakes it makes me have vertigo and fear. I have seen bad things almost happen more than once. My husband is like a fucking cat on shit like that. I have watched him slip before. He was fucking laughing and using his hammer claw to catch himself. WTF?
That confidence scares the shit out of me but I would have been too scared and fell because I couldn't think to use my tools to keep me up there.
Like a deer in the headlights, I know my fear is disabling.
