I am not OP, but this is a common technique in Latin America to rob people, they would throw rocks at you to make you stop and take your belongings (and/or your car). Sometimes they would cut down a tree and place it on the road to block it, but that takes more effort so rocks are often used instead.

Honestly I'm glad he rammed the car into them. He dodged the rock the guy threw and got them both to stop. There was a case that happened not too long ago from where I live where three teens were throwing rocks at cars and one ended up ending the life of a 20 year old woman just driving home. I was shocked to hear it.
