Happened on May 24, 2015, around 7:40 am on route Perm-Yekaterinburg
36 years old driver of Toyota Highlander started overtaking two cars in heavy rain. While on the opposite lane he crashed head on into VAZ-2112. Three people died - 28 years old VAZ driver and two VAZ passengers aged 40 and 34 (34 years old died in the hospital). Four people were injured - 29 years old VAZ passenger and three Toyota passengers aged 34 (drivers wife), 6 (drivers son) and 5 (drivers daughter).
Toyota driver was not injured.
I'm not sure if this was an accident.

I honestly think that he just zoned-out. It can happen to anyone, where he just spaced out for a few seconds, possibly looking out the window, or at the radio or something, and this was the unfortunate result.

I doubt that someone could zone out this bad, especially while overtaking. It's something that requires more activity than just following a straight road without much input; besides being on the left side of the road is unusual, it feels off, keeping you alert.
I'd also assume he had a stroke or something, or fell asleep for a second.

I hear what you’re saying, and agree with you, to a point. Unfortunately, your possession of the innate ability to be assertive and attentive is scarily lost on many. I wouldn’t put it past him having just zoned the fuck out for 3 seconds. Our ability to quantify and classify those actions are one of the reasons we’re still alive, and the people he collided with, aren’t.

A "spell"? He's just an asshole driver, using the oncoming traffic lane as a passing lane. That's... that's not how driving works, precisely for this reason.
Sometimes, the explanation simply boils down to "The guy is a fucking asshole".
It's interesting to note that the asshole driver was uninjured from this crash which killed 3 other people. You know.... drunk drivers often survive horrific wrecks that kill everyone else involved, because the effects of alcohol can make you a little more resistant to the effects of a high speed impact. Wonder what any tests on the driver will turn up?

This guy is driving absolutely too fast for conditions. He deserves to be in jail for life for this reckless bullshit. He killed three people. You can literally do everything right while driving- use your signals, obey the traffic laws, be defensive and alert and focused. But none of that matters if some asshole suddenly pulls into your lane going 70+ mph and you have less than a second to react. That's the shittiest thing about driving, no matter how good you are, all it takes is one asshole in a rush or a drunken haze to fucking END YOU AND EVERYONE IN THE CAR WITH YOU.
