-Always handle it like they are loaded and ready to shoot.
-Never point them at anything that you wouldn't shoot.
-Keep your fingers off the trigger until aiming.

Can confirm, those are the same in Germany with an additional "loading-state-check when taking control of a gun". In every presentation about handling guns, these rules are presented first, last, and somewhere in between, too.
