This is bad gym practice or just a bad gym idk. She needed one spotter for each side, it's obviously impossible for anyone spotting her to help with lift or down if there's an emergency in this setup. Can't tell if that dude was her spotter or just some random either. You can be the greatest lifter in the world and lift every day, but then have trouble with the next lift without warning, a muscle spasm or sudden pain, anything. Man or woman, at any weight. I only know this stuff because my shitty older bro runs a gym

Wouldn’t be surprised if it was this woman’s first time in a gym and genuinely didn’t comprehend how fucking heavy it would be. If you look she doesn’t even know to move the bench so she wouldn’t even have had comfortable/full range of motion.
I’ll bet you the guy didn’t know her but the way she walked up to the bar like it was just another Tuesday he was probably thinking “holy fuck is this superwoman??? I have to watch this” . Not a lot of men can squat 4 plates, much less women ( the women world record for a squat is something like 550lbs)

shouldn't it be fine with a person behind the squatter? 18yo here so idk what im talking about but when i spot my friends for 315 or smth i just stand behind the bar to help them lift up the weight if they dont make it (with safeties on the sides so they dont fuck themselves like in this vid)

You can't spot a squat effectively with one person because someone can tip forward (like what happened here) and if they fail backwards they can just drop the bar. You're not really spotting, you're just assisting them in finishing a lift; in which case they could done the same (or more) muscular work by using the right amount of weight. You would never be able to actually support that weight from your position if they failed. You would make it more dangerous because now they can't safely dump the barbell behind them.
What you're doing isn't a huge risk so I wouldn't worry about it but just so you know the optimal procedure. Two spotters or none.

One is better than none. Worse case is he could of pooled all the weights off one side. The bar would drop to the other side since it has weights on still but if it don't then it should still be easy enough to lift up the side without weights.

I'm laughing at the fact that you think it's safe to dump hundreds of pounds from a standing position off the side and let a 45lb barbell swing wildly. You should be using collars precisely so this doesn't happen. Just fucking dumb it behind you. Take good advice when you get it.

I mean people that tend to ask me for spots are asking towards the end of their sets or trying to max (reasonably) behind is fine, helping at bracing their lat/back so you can help if he starts to fall back or forward. Even with two spotters, this person would've gotten injuries regardless.

From my understanding (and not being there to see it), yes, your setup sounds safe. But I'm also just going off the knowledge I have learned from the expert, and am not the expert himself. But there's also no shame in asking the staff if you ever need to. Staff at gyms love getting to show off to you. lol
