I think he meant for it to fall the other way and that may be the reason he ran with the tree (still an idiot). The notch is cut opposite of the side it falls towards. It looks like he cut the notch too deep. It's hard to tell but it also looks like the weight of the tree is mostly opposite of the notch, which would make it naturally want to fall in the direction it did. I think he intended for it to fall the opposite way and planned his escape route accordingly, but he never looked to see if it went to plan and just assumed.
