The drunks survive because the alcohol relaxes their muscles so instead of tensing up in a crash they are all loose. It's the same reason big mountain skiers are taught to go limp if they crash going down a cliff and start to cartwheel. Going with he flow of energy causes much less damage. However I'm willing to bet that in this case the children were not buckled/secured properly to their seats.
