as someone who comes from a family of alcoholics I'm more inclined to believe that alcoholism isn't a disease and is more of a symptom of an underlying issue such as severe depression or Bipolar disorder. It doesn't help that alcohol is also a depressant.

The reason why drunks survive car crashes more often is because their body is more relaxed and doesn't tense up before the crash happens(slow reaction time due to alcohol) on the other hand people who are sober will tense up because they got a way faster reaction, this will result in a higher chance to receive serious injury.

I think more it's cuz just before moment of impact, they swerve this way or that way, and the hard impact is on the passenger side or whatnot, any side but their side. Like the oncoming vehicle is heading straight for them, or the pole is fast approaching, or that concrete wall is loomin bigger and closer, and normal instincts is to swerve.

The drunks survive because the alcohol relaxes their muscles so instead of tensing up in a crash they are all loose. It's the same reason big mountain skiers are taught to go limp if they crash going down a cliff and start to cartwheel. Going with he flow of energy causes much less damage.
