The people who jumped knew there was no way out of their situation, and saw jumping as a better way to end things compared to suffocation or burning.

I like to think that they are in a high state of shock by this point and that the final decision wasn't as painful as we are empathizing with.

Well I'm talking emotional, not physical shock. I've been in life or death situations and it's been rather out of body (as in not feeling the fear etc).
To pre-edit, I've never been in combat as I'm sure many of you have. I'm also not trying to diminish the experience. I only ask if you feel like sharing, but I imagine the experience to be something where normal emotions are not experienced in real time. I'm sure it does follow after though, and thank you for your sacrifice.
