It's fucking INSANE how billions of people can't swim. And i'm not talking "can only doggy paddle 15 feet before running out of energy" im talking can't clear a single foot of distance to save their fucking life im passionate about this because I've seen so many fucking videos of people drowning less then two feet away from safety, what a god damn stupid way to die

this dude was standing in shallow water, took one step in the 'deep end' then died like a loser. I know its harsh but this is so pethetic to see it actually pisses me off. It's as if this guy has LITERALLY never been in a body of water taller than him in his life, I've seen three year olds who can't swim fall into pools and doggy paddle their way to the edge.

At a certain point, its fucking common sense. I can understand how someone who can't swim lacks the coordination to dogpaddle more than 15 feet without extreme effort. But the moment this dudes feet toes hit open water, it's like his fuckin dick fell off and comsmic particle burned a hole through his cerebellum. he couldn't even keep his face above water for a comical "HELP-blublublub"

Here's what boggles my mind. How could someone reach the age of independence, not know how to swim, and not one day think to themselves "holy fuck i can't swim jesus christ! i'm going to do something about this asap!" i know a lot of people reading this can't swim. If you can't swim and accept that it's just how you are, that's super lame and shameful watch some youtube videos, go to the shallow end of a local pool and learn to float/tread water without letting your feet touch the ground. Then try again, with a focus on conserving energy.

As long as you learn to float, relax, pay attention to your movements, your mind will start to get an understanding of the movement nescessary to navigate water. Not knowing how to swim is embarrassing, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!

At the VERY least people could learn to float on their back...it's idiot proof AND allows you to shout for help without expending any energy. Sure it might not work so well in more dangerous waters, but seems like at least half of these scenarios happen in calm water. Like you said though, if being 3 feet out of arms reach from a ledge is enough to kill you, DON'T FUCKING SWIM WITHOUT A FLOTATION DEVICE!

I'm pretty sure it's a socioeconomic thing. I know how to swim because my parents paid for years of swim lessons when I little and everybody can afford that. Also where the "black people can't swim" thing comes from. Plus you pretty much have to pay to go to every pool. We had to swim in high school and a lot of kids parents could never afford lessons before that. Not everyone is in an area with swimmable lakes and oceans either. (Ie Florida has gators everywhere)

You can look at data for populations and make general correlations about economics and swimming but at the end of the day if an adult doesn't know how to swim and doesn't ever bother learnings how, then it's entirety their fault they haven't learned to swim.

"No one bought me swimming lessons as a kid" is no excuses for an adult who chooses to never bother learning how to swim.

What's funny is that humans seem to be among the only animals that can't swim naturally. Throw a cat, dog, horse, elephant in water, they'll swim even if it's their first time. I believe part of why is because we humans can focus too much on the "omg I'll drown and die and then what happens will there be paradise or hell or nothing oh no I don't want to disappear help" part, while animals just think "okay gotta survive agitates limbs and swims to safety"
