It's fucking INSANE how billions of people can't swim. And i'm not talking "can only doggy paddle 15 feet before running out of energy" im talking can't clear a single foot of distance to save their fucking life im passionate about this because I've seen so many fucking videos of people drowning less then two feet away from safety, what a god damn stupid way to die

this dude was standing in shallow water, took one step in the 'deep end' then died like a loser. I know its harsh but this is so pethetic to see it actually pisses me off. It's as if this guy has LITERALLY never been in a body of water taller than him in his life, I've seen three year olds who can't swim fall into pools and doggy paddle their way to the edge.

At a certain point, its fucking common sense. I can understand how someone who can't swim lacks the coordination to dogpaddle more than 15 feet without extreme effort. But the moment this dudes feet toes hit open water, it's like his fuckin dick fell off and comsmic particle burned a hole through his cerebellum. he couldn't even keep his face above water for a comical "HELP-blublublub"

Here's what boggles my mind. How could someone reach the age of independence, not know how to swim, and not one day think to themselves "holy fuck i can't swim jesus christ! i'm going to do something about this asap!" i know a lot of people reading this can't swim. If you can't swim and accept that it's just how you are, that's super lame and shameful watch some youtube videos, go to the shallow end of a local pool and learn to float/tread water without letting your feet touch the ground. Then try again, with a focus on conserving energy.

As long as you learn to float, relax, pay attention to your movements, your mind will start to get an understanding of the movement nescessary to navigate water. Not knowing how to swim is embarrassing, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

At the VERY least people could learn to float on their back...it's idiot proof AND allows you to shout for help without expending any energy. Sure it might not work so well in more dangerous waters, but seems like at least half of these scenarios happen in calm water. Like you said though, if being 3 feet out of arms reach from a ledge is enough to kill you, DON'T FUCKING SWIM WITHOUT A FLOTATION DEVICE!

I'm pretty sure it's a socioeconomic thing. I know how to swim because my parents paid for years of swim lessons when I little and everybody can afford that. Also where the "black people can't swim" thing comes from. Plus you pretty much have to pay to go to every pool. We had to swim in high school and a lot of kids parents could never afford lessons before that. Not everyone is in an area with swimmable lakes and oceans either. (Ie Florida has gators everywhere)

You can look at data for populations and make general correlations about economics and swimming but at the end of the day if an adult doesn't know how to swim and doesn't ever bother learnings how, then it's entirety their fault they haven't learned to swim.

"No one bought me swimming lessons as a kid" is no excuses for an adult who chooses to never bother learning how to swim.

What's funny is that humans seem to be among the only animals that can't swim naturally. Throw a cat, dog, horse, elephant in water, they'll swim even if it's their first time. I believe part of why is because we humans can focus too much on the "omg I'll drown and die and then what happens will there be paradise or hell or nothing oh no I don't want to disappear help" part, while animals just think "okay gotta survive agitates limbs and swims to safety"

It's very possible the child was the initial focus, not the man. Furthermore, the person videoing may have been young, and has probably never seen anyone drown before. We know he's drowning because we're watching a video with that title and we've seen many examples before. But it may not be obvious to him. He might have thought the victim was just playing around, splashing, or otherwise just couldn't make sense of what was going on.

I doubt he knew that he was drowning, but even if he did realize that at some point, he might have been frozen in shock and fear of what he was seeing. We all like to think that we would jump into action during a tragedy, but horrific situations can sort of scramble your brain and you don't know what to do. Especially if you have no training.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yup. People think they would be the heroes and no how to do everything - but when you are just going about everyday life, you aren't expecting anything out of the ordinary to happen.

I once saw an old guy start to stagger and I caught him before he hit the ground - and I held him for a while - and some useless ambulance drivers came over from nearby, and did NOTHING useful, and then some well trained second teer paramedics showed up and immediately started working to save the guys life, doing CPR and stuff - but it never crossed my mind that I should check for a pulse, and start CPR myself.

The guy died - and I think I'd do more in the same situation now, but at the time I just didn't THINK.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Thanks for sharing that. It really takes some type of training or mental exercise to prepare oneself to make proper and decisive action in emergency situations. I remember when I was a child (a VERY long time ago) we were on a field trip and we were at somebody's home with a pool. Another child was playing on the deep end ladder but then slipped and started thrashing. Only inches from the ladder, he started thrashing about, gulping for air and water. My mind went blank. All I could do was watch. I sensed something was wrong. I had a sense that he was drowning. But my brain couldn't really process that I could anything about it. Fortunately, another kid walked around the pool, grabbed him, and pulled him those few inches back to the ladder. I remember feeling bad that I didn't think about doing that.

Your reaction is how probably MOST people will react, and social psychology is interesting - and studies have shown that in many situations, the more people there are around, the less likely someone is to react. If people see everybody else doing nothing, they feel pressure to do nothing themselves.

And Hollywood has probably conned most people into believing that they would be the 007 in every high stress situation, and I think TV has painted pictures that we see again and again of heroes, so most of us see this type of behavior, and believe that we would be the 1 in a 100 that save the day - but cop and military training shows that people need training and practice to respond instantly when quick reaction is required.

I watch way, WAY too many videos, on sites like this, and before this, Liveleak, Stileproject - going back many years - and I love seeing videos of cops in action, totally TACKLING the bad guys in ways that very obviously demonstrate that they were football players or wrestlers in highschool.

You can see videos were people react instantly - without the time taken to actually think about what to do - and this is all about training and practice.

What most people don't realize - is that during wars like WW1, the military brass were shocked to discover that MOST soldiers wouldn't shoot and kill the enemy. So military training adapted to train this reticence out of people that prevented them from wanting to kill. But the side effect is it leave many soldiers very broken when they come back from war, and I think the entire change in the culture of a society is damaged by the group brainwashing that is necessary to shape society so that it supports wars - ANY war, that the politicians choose to engage in.

It's so weird how people just don't have an innate ability to swim like I remember getting in the water as a kid and I wasn't like an Olympic swimmer but I could understand the physics way more than this full on adult???

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Lots of people are just stupid - and can't figure it out - and there may be a fairly big difference between people who have very little fat on their bodies - and sink QUICKLY.

I was a THIN kid - and took swimming lessons - but I was REALLY scared - because I don't remember the teachers ever being close or even me feeling that they were aware enough to save me if I needed it.

NOW - I'm probably fat enough that I would float easily - but I've probably put on 60 pounds compared to when I was 30 years old.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Exactly, as a kid, i thought "not knowing how to swim" is 'can't doggy paddle past 15 feet or so before trouble' which is still true, that's not knowing how to swim. But I've said this many times before, it's fucking absolutely bonkers how many videos I've seen of someone drowning because they can't swim one foot to literally save their fucking life. The majority of the drowning videos i've seen, the person is always less than 5 feet away from land. In this case, this dude was in shallow water, took one step into a drop off, and literally couldn't move his body 12 inches back to shallow water. How god damn pathetic.

Reminds me of a video of that kid who filmed himself drowning on a school trip via his gopro, surrounded by dozens of people hanging out in shallow water. I've also seen multiple videos of groups of people drowning near an arms reach away from land.

Sometimes, people don't realize what is happening - until after - and it's pretty common for people to freeze - and not realize at the time that they should do something.

Lifeguards have said that drowning does NOT look like what most people THINK drowning looks like. MANY people go under with very little splashing - and don't come up again.

Jump in the discussion.

But could you live with yourself if you just stood and watched

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yes, because I know I was alive. I'd rather be alive 100% than a less than 100% chance of survival helping someone else.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

It's cruel, but it's better one death than both of you.

Sure you can swim, but the other person can't, and they're gonna attempt to use you as a buoy with zero fucks for your safety.

Panicked state is a bitch.

How would you manage it, attempt to surface them to lay flat above the surface with an inhale, which I feel, doubtful at best?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Idiots who don't know what they are talking about say "go in and help them" - but the drowning person instinctively grabs anything and everything they can get their hands on, and they WILL drag a rescuer under to their deaths ....

I think you'd be much safer waiting until the person totally stops struggling, and THEN grab them, and pull them to shore. They WILL be unconscious at that point, and will need CPR, and it's not guaranteed that they will live - but I'm not going near someone who is thrashing in the water.

Why do people get into water when they can't swim? At least all my black friends growing up had an unnatural fear of water due to not being able to swim. It kept them outta the water. What a moron.

Jump in the discussion.

Its crazy how many small little examples of institutional and systemic racism we all know about while idiots say it never existed at all.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Bro that's not racism. Their parents need to teach them to swim, that a failure of their parents. I was swimming at like 3. What does it take to learn to, take a deep breath and float on your back. Float around and yell “yo I'm an idiot and can't swim, throw me a buoy”.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

You misunderstand. Access to pools and swimming locations in POC heavy areas was extremely limited historically. They didn't learn how to swim because where WOULD they?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Historically, possibly. Now a days? There's really no excuse for people to not be able to swim.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Doesn't make sense. Did the pools magic back? The community centers? You a retard.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Is anyone keeping them from flopping their black ass into a body of water and learning to swim? It's not rocket science. Kick your feet and move your arms. 🙄

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Wait. Yes. There is something stopping them. Access. Again, are the pools and community centers magicking into existence? Lotta the ones in major urban centers require local residence. Do you even GO to these magic pools you assume exist out of nowhere after agreeing they didn't? You acknowledged a thing and then immediately forgot that YOU agreed. Super weird.

I don't think it's intentional, but theres no way this kinda behavior doesn't bleed over IRL. Its 2024, why do people still consider and mentally treat online conversations differently? I am a person. You are a person. We are exchanging words conciously. There is NO difference between here and IRL. You would not have had that weird brainfart IRL though. Im not dunking on you or anything, its just a weird social thing I see.

I wonder if its why you guys don't have friends IRL. People pick up on weirdness like this in day to day life and they just kinda don't call you back. We know your online behavior is why women don't date you IRL, they and you both say so. But its such a dumb obvious thing, so how does it happen at all?

Yeah, I mod some hentai subreddits not because of a power trip, or thinking Reddit cares, but because… where the frick else am I gonna foster kink or fandom-porn communities? Facebook? Lmfao no. YouTube? That's not right. Twitter? Yeah no, frick that. There's analogous ones, sure, but it's twitter. The format was trash before Elon took over, and now that he has… no. Tumblr? Oh! I came from that! Because they banned the fricking porn! And spawned a demented new form of purity culture! So, off the list! Internet forums? Growth is pretty impossible these days, and growth means more people getting into it because of the community and then making art for the subcategories of porn so… yeah that's the appeal beyond human interaction? The more popular a kink is, the more common content exists for it, so the more people that end up into it, the more stuff to my tastes there is?
